Is Ovis Yarns closing down?

No, Ovis Yarns is not currently ceasing trading - however the business has been scaled back and streamlined to allow Becky to change careers.

Ovis Yarns will now be focusing on delivering monthly clubs, bi-monthly sock clubs, quarterly seasonal boxes and a final Geekmas (to ship in October).

There will be no futher monthly uploads of yarn after the 1st April 2022. Ovis/Becky will also no longer appear at public events or be excepting new wholesale orders.

Existing wholesale agreements remain unaffected.

Does Ovis sell overseas?

Unfortunately due to a combination of Brexit, VAT MOSS, and increasing postage costs we no longer offer shipping outside of the UK, Isle of Man and Channel Islands.

For the past 12 months the business has lost considerable sums to parcels being turned away at customs, needing to be sent tracked and often international packages end up costing upwards of £30 to get to their destinations.

For this reason we have taken the decision to stop international sales now the business is being streamlined.

Do you run workshops?

I no longer run workshops.

What bases do you stock?

Here at Ovis yarns it is all about WOOL!

Wool is an insulator, breathable, and fire resistant. Wool will keep you warm in winter and cool in the summer... and best of all it grows back every year, so is renewable!

Our staple base is Bluefaced Leicester (BFL) as it is a British grown, strong and soft fibre that takes dye beautifully. Occasionally an OOAK base may contain a mix of different fibres from different species or breeds, but my rule is at least 50% of the yarn/fibre must be wool.

Why no Merino?

I do not stock many Merino bases as Merino reared in the UK is extremely rare (to our knowledge there are only a few flocks in Devon) Merino wools that are classed as British have come from the Falklands Islands. While I have no issue with the classification, nor do I take a political stance on the status of the Falkland Islands...  I feel wool that has travelled from the other side of the world isn't sustainable. When we do stock Merino, it is generally sourced from Italian mills and from Non-muesled flocks.

When is the store updated?

From 2022 Ovis will no longer be having regular updates - spares of clubs will be uploaded at the end of each month. Seasonal boxes and special offers will also be launched at this point. The best way to stay informed is following on social media or signing up to our newsletter.

How do I look after my yarn?

Hand dyed yarns are by their nature delicate, and even yarn that has been superwash treated can bleed or felt from time to time. However I would recommend the following:

  • Never machine wash above 30 degree, tumble dry or iron our yarn or any fabric made from Ovis yarns. Yarn that is totally unsuitable for machine washing will state it on the label.
  • If you need to wash the yarn or fabric, gently hand wash with as little agitation as possible (unless you wish to felt it, then by all means rub and squish away) in lukewarm water with a small amount of soap (Fairy/Dawn works well) or your desired wool wash. Then dry the yarn/fabric on top of a towel on a flat surface. If you need to remove excess water, place a second towel on top of the yarn/fabric and lightly squeeze out the moisture.
  • I steam set my yarns to try and minimise bleeding and increase dye fastness.
  • Pencil rovings and single ply yarns should be treated with extra care, as the nature in which they have been produced makes them susceptible to felting.

I do not use wool washes at Ovis Yarns due to personal allergy reasons, for this reason our BFL/Mahsam blends may smell a bit "sheepy", but I believe that to be part of it's charm.

Do you accept custom orders or can yarn be reserved?

No. Becky is now only dyeing on set days each month and has no time for custom orders.

How will my order be shipped and which carrier do you use?

All orders are shipped via Royal Mail 1st class on Mondays and Thursdays. If an order has not arrived within 21 days (UK) please let us know and I will ensure the issue is resolved. Unfortunately before these periods Royal Mail does not consider the package lost.

Clubs are shipped each month between the 19th and 21st via Royal Mail 2nd class.

Seasonal yarn boxes, Geekmas, and orders over £75 are sent tracked for no additional cost to the customer.

 Do you accept wholesale orders?
New wholesale orders are no longer available - existing stockists can place wholesale orders.

Do you welcome collaborations?

Collaborations may be possible on a case by case basis. If you have a suggestion or offer then get in touch - becky@ovisyarns.co.uk
